Decopatch

Décopatch  is a brand name of a French supplier of decoupage papers and paper maché figures.

Decoupage is thought to originate from East Siberian tomb art. Nomadic Tribes would cut out felts to decorate their tombs. By the 12th century the Chinese cut out paper  to decorate lanterns, windows, boxes and other objects. As a result of trading with the Far East in the 17th century decoupage became popular in  Italy and it is generally thought that it is through these trade links that the cut out paper decorations made their way into Europe.

Any paper or fabric may be used to decorate an object but try to avoid ink jet printed items as these will smear.  Card  or stiff paper which is sold for crafting can be tricky to use however the Décopatch papers are easily applied to any kind of surface (flat or uneven). It produces a smooth texture and a real paint effect as it is deep-dyed and specially coated to ensure that the colours will not fade or run and the paper will not disintegrate when glued. It is a very thin but strong and flexible paper making it extremely easy to apply to objects.

In Slap ‘n Dash Décopatch is very popular with those who do not want to paint, like instant results or want to take their work home straight away.  It is also great for up-cycling old items including furniture and as we have over 120 designs in stock customers often come in just to buy the paper. The possibilities are endless!

If the items are purely decorative you can just do a base layer of glue, followed by a layer of paper and then seal the paper with the glue.  However, if you want your item to be more durable we recommend you apply several layers of the acceptor glue.  We have covered some mugs in the studio which have been through the dishwasher 5 times (I had to check it out!)

The videos show how simple it is to do and also how the possibilities are endless. In France they have even decorated a car (however that was a lot of layers of varnish)

Ceramic Painting

Ceramic painting was the inspiration to opening the studio and to date is the primary activity.  It really is simple and you really do not have to be an artist!  We have stencils, idea books and lots of samples to look at.  We even have crystal paints (the customer used “Popyfields” on the mad birds stomach) which create unique and interesting patterns putting a instant professional looking finish piece.

Children have no bars on their imagination and it’s great to watch their faces as we explain what their options are and they just want to get on create, an off they go with their ideas and imagination.

We have adults in who haven’t painted since they left school, but with a little encouragement they are able to create something they can be proud of.  Once you’ve done a workshop it gives you the confidence to create . https://www.facebook.com/events/1555822334650054/
